Week 2 Homes as a Safe Haven

“Many of the social restraints which in the past have helped to reinforce and to shore up the family are dissolving and disappearing. The time will come when only those who believe deeply and actively in the family will be able to preserve their families in the midst of the gathering evil around us.”
-President Spencer W. Kimball, Families Can Be EternalEnsign, Nov. 1980, 4.

I find it very interesting that a Prophet of God had these words to say nearly 40 years ago and they ring true in today’s society more than ever. The “gathering evil around us” is so relevant to the world we live in today.  The attack on the family, its values, and the ever-changing views of it are hanging by a thread.  What can we do to preserve the family at this time today?
The home becomes the place of safety where the spirit can reside for our children, their friends and ourselves.  This needs to be a sanctuary for all the crazy out in the world. We need this fortress to help protect them against the evil that they face day to day and possibly hour by hour.  Making our home this safe place by inviting the spirit always, keeping ourselves true to the gospel principles and praying for our homes to be that refuge for our children is a must in today’s world.  We must continually strive for that peace the spirit thrives in.  We must do our part as parents and spouses to set that example of love, charity, humility and be as Christ.
Our décor should represent holiness for our homes, to show people what we stand for, who we stand for and reflect the peace that Christ gives us through the spirit.  Our words need to be positive towards one another in love and build each other up as we are all children of God and have that divine worth.  Our homes can have beautiful music in it that we can hear and feel our Saviors love for us.  The space in our homes need to be clean and without clutter so that our souls can feel at peace and not anxious in our endeavors to be one with Christ.  The love we share for one another needs to be felt with love and hugs, hand holding, shoulder touching and all those ways we can encourage our children and spouses to be the best they can be.
All of our senses are used to invite the spirit in our homes as well as keep out the evil around us.  Our home is a place that can be a haven for us and our children.  A place we know we can go and feel safe and be at peace to allow us to hear the spirit, feel His love and know our truest divine potential as Sons and Daughters of God.
